Care of pregnant cow and buffalo
Farmers can achieve more production in terms of milk and healthy calves by good care and management of pregnant cow, buffalo and other dairy animals and achieve full milk production to whole of lactation period.
Pregnant should be provided 1.2 to 2 kg balanced ration along with green fodder and dry fodder daily also feed good quality leguminous fodder.
The pregnant animal should not be very lean nor very fatty in condition.
Do not allow pregnant cow or buffalo to fight with one another oe with other animals because this can result in injury to fetus or animal itself.Avoid pregnant animals from slippery floors,the animal can fall and injure himself in terms of fracture and dislocation of bones.
Monitor accurate breeding record and expected date of calving for better pregnant animal management.
pregnant animals should be provided free entry for drinking water and animal should not in stress condition like environmental and physical stress which leads to abortion.
Separate pregnant cows and buffaloes two weeks before parturition to individual parturition pens or other places which are clean and dry.
Feed pregnant animals laxative diet 3 to 5 days before parturition which includes
wheat bran 3 kg
groundnut cake 500 grams
magnisium sulphate 50 grams
salt sodium chloride 30 grams
Increase 1kg more concentrate ration after 7 months of pregnancy, because fetus growth demands more nutrients .
After 7 months of pregnancy dry off milking which is very important for next lactation.
Balanced ration prevents milk fever and ketosis and also provide mineral mixture 50 grams daily for better health of pregnant cow and buffalo.
