The Jantar Mantar of Jaipur is known to be a collection of 19 astronomical instruments that was built by the Rajput king Sawai Jai Singh II, who is also the founder of Jaipur, Rajasthan. The monument was completed in the year 1734. It features the largest stone sundial of the world, and is a well known UNESCO World Heritage site. It is located quite close to the City Palace and Hawa Mahal. The instruments helps observe astronomical positions with the naked eye. The observatory is a perfect example of the Ptolemaic positional astronomy which was actually shared by many civilizations.

The monument also features instruments that operate in each of the three main classical celestial coordinate systems: the horizon-zenith local system, the equatorial system, as well as the ecliptic system. The Kanmala Yantraprakara is a type of instrument that works in two systems and allows transformation of the coordinates directly from one system to the other. It is known to be the biggest sundial in the world.

The monument was actually damaged in the 19th century. Early restoration work of Jantar Mantar was undertaken under the supervision of Major Arthur Garrett, who is known to be a keen amateur astronomer, during his appointment as Assistant State Engineer for the Jaipur District.

The name jantar is derived from word called yantra which is a Sanskrit word, that means "instrument, machine", and mantar from mantrana also a Sanskrit word "consult, calculate"). Therefore, the meaning of Jantar Mantar is 'calculating instrument'.

Jai Singh noticed that the Zij, which was actually used for determining the position of celestial objects, did not perfectly match the positions calculated on the table. For this reason he constructed 5 new observatories in different cities in order to create a more accurate Zij. The astronomical tables Jai Singh created, called the Zij-i Muhammad Shahi, were used for a long time in India for about a century. (However, the table had very little significance out of India.) It was also used to measure time.
