ज्ञानवापी मस्जिद को एएसआई के वैज्ञानिक सर्वेक्षण कार्य में देखा गया है ताकि यह निर्धारित किया जा सके कि 17 वीं शताब्दी की मस्जिद का निर्माण वाराणसी में एक हिंदू मंदिर की पूर्व-मौजूदा संरचना पर किया गया था। मुस्लिम प्रतिनिधियों ने धमकी दी है कि अगर मस्जिद के अंदर मूर्तियों के अवशेष पाए जाने की "अफवाहों" पर रोक नहीं लगाई गई तो वे भारतीय पुरातत्व सर्वेक्षण (एएसआई) द्वारा विवादास्पद ज्ञानवापी मस्जिद के चल रहे सर्वेक्षण से खुद को "अलग" कर लेंगे।

The Gyanvapi mosque is seen on the ASI’s scientific survey work to determine whether the 17th-century mosque was constructed over a pre-existing structure of a Hindu temple, in Varanasi. The Muslim representatives have threatened to "disassociate" themselves with the ongoing survey of the contentious Gyanvapi Mosque by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) if "rumours" that remains of idols were found inside the Mosque were not checked.
