Rani Ki Vav (lit. 'The Queen's Stepwell') is a well known stepwell located in the Patan town in Gujarat state of India. It is situated on the banks of Saraswati river. Its construction is attributed to queen Udayamati, who was the daughter of Khengara of Saurashtra, and she was the spouse of the 11th-century Chaulukya king Bhima I. This stepwell was rediscovered in 1940s and was actually restored in 1980s by the ASI(Archaeological Survey of India). It is known to be one of the UNESCO's World Heritage Sites since 2014.

Rani ki Vav is also known to be one of finest and the largest examples of its kind and is designed as an inverted temple that highlights the sanctity of water, the stepwell made in seven levels of stairs with around 1500 sculptures in it; out of which 500 principal sculptures of Bhagwan Vishnu are there and more than 1000 minor ones combine religious and Legendary imagery.

Rani ki Vav History in English:

Rani ki vav was built during Chaulukya dynasty's rule. Prabandha-Chintamani, which was composed by the Jain monk Merutunga in the year 1304, mentions: "Udayamati, the daughter of Naravaraha Khengara, built this novel stepwell at Shripattana (Patan) surpassing the glory of the Sahastralinga Tank". According to this composition, the stepwell was commissioned in the year 1063 and was fully finished after 20 years. It is usually assumed that this stepwell was built in the memory of Bhima I (r. c. 1022 – 1064) by his queen Udayamati and was also completed by Udayamati and Karna after Bhima's death. Commissariat puts the date of construction of this stepwell to 1032 based on the architectural similarity to Vimalavasahi temple which was built in Mount Abu in the same year.

The stepwell flooded at a later stage by the Saraswati river and silted over. In 1890s, Henry Cousens and James Burgess visited the stepwell when it was completely buried under the earth and a few well shaft and pillars were slightly visible. They said that it as being a huge pit around 87 metres (285 ft). In Travels in Western India, James Tod told that the material from the stepwell was actually reused in one of the other stepwell which was built in modern Patan, probably Trikam Barot ni Vav (Bahadur Singh stepwell). In the 1940s, excavations which were carried out under the Baroda State revealed the Rani ki Vav. In the year 1986, a major excavation and restoration was done at this site by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). An image of queen Udayamati was also recovered during the excavation process. The restoration at Rani ki Vav was carried out from the year 1981 to 1987.

Rani ki vav was declared a Monument of National Importance and protected by the ASI and it added to the list of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites on 22 June 2014. It was also named as India's "Cleanest Iconic Place" at the 2016 Indian Sanitation Conference.
